Travelling - Uganda - and Africa - Karibu

Travelling

There are no national flights in Uganda. No trains, no Greyhound buses. One travels in cars:Tour operators, rented cars, private cars. A virtual map of Uganda is therefore a road map. The first tour you do on arrival in Entebbe International Airport is from the airport to the capital Kampala. Via the expressway or the old Entebbe Road. 45 kms.

Entebbe
Entebbe is "Kampala Airport", but it is also a city in its own right. There are expensive hotels, malls and restaurants close to Lake Victoria. The ZOO, the Botanical Garden. When you have settled in Kampala, do yourself the favour to go sightseeing in Entebbe.

  • Entebbe International Airport, my pictures here/.

  • The Botanical Gardens

The Botanical Gardens were originated by the British at the end of the 19th           century. It really is a nice place to go, and you can have a nice lunch on the         Lake Victoria coastline. In addition you get the myth of Tarzan. The very first       Tarzan movie was shot here in part. Get a guide!

Reptiles Village

Also there is a very nice and interesting Reptiles Park, Uganda Reptiles Village,     right in the middle of a forgotten residential area. Be sure to go there. It is         very special. See my pictures from this interesting spot, right here/.

Zoological Garden - Entebbe Zoo

The Zoological Garden in Entebbe is as much a botanical garden as is The            Botanical Gardens themselves. The only rhinos in Uganda outside the Ziwa
Rhino Sanctuary in North West Uganda are to be found here. Also there is a          very good restaurant and a giant playground including a swimmingpool. The          children love it. It is also a very safe area in the sense that there are no cars,        and it is a fenced area. People don´t get lost.

  • UWEC - Entebbe Zoo
"Popularly known as “Entebbe Zoo", UWEC was opened in 1952, by the Colonial Government in Uganda, as a reception centre for wild animals that were found as casualties. It’s about seeing and learning about animals. Participate in corporate events, behind-the-scenes experiences, dine at the restaurant, have your children enjoy the playground and much more throughout the year!"

Highway (Expressway) or low way - the Expressway
The highway, in Uganda called the expressway, takes you directly to core areas around Kampala city. Some Ugandans do have problems understanding the meaning of traffic lights, so be aware when you reach one of the few traffic lights on the way. Otherwise the expressway is really good and fast. You pay 5000 Ugandan shilling when you leave the Entebbe area. Also if you go from Kampala to Entebbe

Or go along the old road through Kisubi District. Kampala is divided into districts. If you stay for a longer period of time, it's a good thing to learn the names of some of them, and where they are. There are many of them, e.g.: Muyenga, Bukasa, Munyonio, Bbunga, Kansanga, Makandi, Bugolobi, Kisugu, Nakasero, etc. Google Maps can be quite helpful in Kampala and in Uganda too.

Here → Google Maps.

Local authorities have are these days setting up signposts with the names of the roads. Maybe for the benefit of Google Maps. Maybe for the benefit of Uber Customers. But the locals will not know the names of the small roads. They will know the names of the districts and the number or colour of the gates on the road. Must roades in Uganda have no official  names.

The low way - Entebbe Road

  • St. Mary's College, Kisubi, Entebbe Road - Duc in Altum
Going on the old Entebbe Road one passes through Kisubi, where you find the training institutions of The Brothers of Christian Instruction, Mount St. Teresa, Kisubi: St. Mary's College, University of Kisubi (UniK), St. Savio Junior. It's one of the most powerful catholic networks in Uganda, and the campus is very impressive. Two friends took me there.

Monuments: Saint Therese of the Child Jesus, Patroness of the Brothers' Province of Uganda: In Thanksgiving to the Little Flower for two cures.

Brother Charles Jules Poitras, Founder of Saint Teresa Province Uganda.

    The Facebook group states:
"St. Mary's College is the best school in Uganda, producing prominent OBs who are role models to society. Known to have produced prominent lawyers, doctors, politicians, engineers, artists, entertainers no other school can be rated in the same breadth as SMACK".

  • Mabamba Swamp
Various agents will want to organize the trip and take you there, but you can easily go there yourself and hire a boat. See list of agents and location here. There is a nice group on Facebook, Mabamba Swamp Shoebill Watching, where you can even uploade pictures. We  didn´t go neither sailing nor birdwatching that day, however. In Entebbe Zoological Garden there are two or three shoebills.

Aquarius Kigo Resort, going from Kampala / Munyonyo on the Expressway is close. Branch off a Kigo, shortly after Kiggwa Bridge. The place is luxury, the view, the restaurant, the service, the swimmingpool. We spent a Sunday there. See the pictures → here/.

  • Arena Mall - Century Cine Max
There are many shopping malls in Kampala and surroundings: Acacia Mall (see this) in the northern part, Village Mall in Bugolobi, the brand new Arena Mall (under construction in January 2023), in Entebbe. It's all very westernized, and you can buy anything. If you need a break from the pollution and the heat, it is a good place to go. And lots of parking opportunities, unlike Europe. Arena Mall is at the end og Ggaba Road towards town, and the view is amazing. The good cinemas are there, and also very good icecream > here/

  • British School Kampala - BSK
On Tank Hill Road. BSK is on Tank Hill Road in Muyenga/Bukasa, my own mailroad, and so is their big swimmingpool, where one can go swimming in the weekends, when the pool is not busy with schoolkids and competition swimmers. The pool is 1 km apart from the school.

    Cinema Century Cinemax, Acacia Mall
It was my first visit to a cinema in Uganda. All of a sudden it was like not being in Kampala but back in Denmark. A cinema in an exclusive mall, people having popcorn, sodas, etc. in the afternoon. It was fun.

  • Drop (the)
The Drop on Tank Hill Road is one in a lot of new cafés and restaurants in Muyenga. It's very cosy and pretends to be a kind of a street kitchen. The idea is funny, but it is a bit complicated when you are going to pay. Ask for one joint bill. The place has a very good, free, wifi. The first floor is for meetings, computerized work, etc.

    Great Indian Dhabba restaurant
We had a quick early dinner there in an old garden in the richer part of Kampala. The food was good, not expensive, and many waiters. A nice, interesting and relaxed restaurant at Wampewo Avenue.

  • Kampala Downtown
Downtown Kampala business area is not so big seen in relation to the rest of the town with big avenues, hotels, roads and districts. But it sure is compact. Go and have a look, and have a look at my pictures. Only bring valuables that you are prepared loosing. it is hectic, it is a boiling pot. A teenagers once said to me: "Kampala city center looks as if it is 500 years old!". She just may be right.

On the Lubiri Ring Road, Mengo and Lubiri, opposite Kenlon Hotel. Interesting story this about the Kingdoms of Uganda. From one end of the King’s Mile to the other one can see the Parliament and the Palace. And on this very blog one can also see the Queen Mother of England going in a car on the King’s Mile in 1962!

  • La Foret - La Foret Muyenga Resort Gardens
La Foret is a nice, cosy kind of forgotten house with a swinningpool. Go there and have a swim, a snack and a drink in complete anonymity. It cost 10,000 shilling to enter, and as always in Uganda parking is available. However, the last time I was there (January 2023), a young guy there was hired to upgrade it and do some more marketing. We'll see!

  • Speke Resort / Lake Victoria / Munyonyo Commenwealth Resort / Speke Resort Munyonyo Marine / Mulungu Beach
You can make this extraordinary excursion in a couple of hours, going on Gaba Road towards Bbunga (which you don't notice going through. It's just a road!) and turning through Munyonyo towards the expressway. And you can do it with no entrance or parking fees.

Speke Resort is a nice and open lawn, people used to go swimming there, but in January 2023 it was flooded. There is a swinning pool (where you have to pay). Go through the #Munyonyo Commenwealth Resort. It is really interesting and big, a town in itself. And a very good, not expensive restaurant with a view to a lake and a nice garden.

Go through the hotel and find the Speke Resort Munyonyo Marine. It is a very interesting place. In the background you see Mulungu Beach. Just a small landing site. We didn´t go there, but it is just up the road.

Tank Hill Road - Kampala East on Lake Victoria
The main road going from Kabalagala/Muyenga Road through Muyenga to Bukasa in Eastern Uganda, practically touching  the northwestern coast of Lake Victoria, is Tank Hill road. It is turning into an exclusive and expensive residential area with malls, hotels, cafés and restaurants. It goes into Bukasa Road. It is a Muyunga area and for many a wealthy area.

From Kampala to Fort Portal in West Uganda

One can go from Kampala to Fort Portal in the West, on the threshold of the Rwenzori Mountains, and the border to Congo, in a loop. The road is fine, but still not European quality level. Don't go too fast, there are too many accidents already. The potholes are not getting fewer, and the roads are not constructed for heavy trucks. It is dangerous.

A Northern loop going from Kampala (A109 on Google Maps) via Northern Bypass/Kampala-Jinja Highway to Mityana, Mubende, Kyegegwa (Red Earth Café), Kyenjojo, Rugombe (Mukwano Tea/Hotel Cornerstone), Fort Portal.

First trip in 2013 - Equator, Café Frikadellen, Rubona Primary School, Bwindi Impenetrable Rainforest, Buhoma, Kazinga Channel, Queen Elizabeth

My very first trip to Uganda took me from Kololo Hill in Kampala, Makerere University, Jinja (Eastwards) for a swim in the Nile/Source of the Nile.

And  west of (Southern Route) Kampala via Equator to Masaka (the white hotel) (Café Frikadellen), Rubona Primary School, Bwindi Impenetrable Rainforest (the Gorillas), Buhoma, the Kasinga Channel between Lake Edward and Lake Albert, and the Queen Elizabeth National Park/Katunguro Bridge.

Circuit trip Kampala  Fort Portal Kampala November 2021

In November 2021 I did the Circuit Route from Kampala to Fort Portal going out via the Northern loop towards Mubende, and back to Kampala via the Southern Route over Mbarara.

We set off going from Bukasa to Ggaba Road through Bbunga and  Munyonyo to the Expressway towards Entebbe, branching off towards Kampala, going to the Northern Bypass and towards Fort Portal via Mubende.

The words and places that I wrote down on the trip goes as follows: Baujoko Town, Jezza Town, Zegoti Town, Mityana, Myanzi (Robusta Coffee), Mubende, Lusaliira, Nabingoola, Kyegagwa (Danish coffee plantation, refugee camp), Kisamura, Kakabara (big new church), Kikyendo, Rwibale, Matibi, Kihura, Kiregesa, Musinge, Kaihura (Red Earth Café), Mukunyu, Rugombe, Kagorogoro, Intoroko Road, Kibale National Park (Monkeys, Chimpanses), Kabarole District, Kiamara Tea Estates, Kaswa, Kiko Tea Estate, Kitumba, Kyaninga Lodge.

You then enter Fort Portal with the MTN Service Center straight ahead of youl: Go right to Sunrise Hotel, go left to Gardens Restaurant.

Go through town, around 15 km from Fort Portal: Signposts: Vinika Hospital, Catholic Diocese, Rujuna Hilltop, Rubona Town Council, Rubona Stock Farm, Brain Bridge, Kasese 51 km, HEM Petroleum, Kisumoro Technical Institute, Rocket Sculpture, behind: Ntendere Estate, Hsonya Preschool, St. John’s Kibito High School, Ndali Lodge. Biharve. Lake Mburo National Park / Eagle’s Nest. Ancole Longhorn. Cattle and Zebras.

Rwakobo Lodge and Lake Mburo National Park

We stayed there one or two nights. The lodge is on a hill with a good view. It is rather small compared to other lodges. We also went on a night safari there in the national park, but my experience is that night safaris are rarely fruitful. Where? > Mbarara/Masaka Road between Lyantonde and Igongo Cultural Centre and Mbarara.

  • Rwakobo Rock Lodge

"Set on a massive granite outcrop, just beside Lake Mburo National Park, Rwakobo offers private thatched cottages, with solar lighting, flush toilets and solar heated showers, which blend into the natural landscape. The cottages are dotted around the hill taking advantage of rocky ledges and secluded corners. The cottages celebrate the natural lines of the surrounding wilderness. They also provide guests with real comfort and luxury that doesn’t cost the earth".

Muyenga/Bukasa/Kampala to Fort Portal
One time I drove from Muyenga/Bukasa in the Eastern part of Kampala to Fort Portal, out Kampala I went via > King's Lake > King's Mile (where you see Queen Elizabeth II move on the old video in the Thanksgiving Chapter) > Northern loop > Mityana (A109) > Mubende (Fort Portal Road)
Kyegegwa and onwards.

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary
Make a detour going North West to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, River Kafu, Masindi, Murchison Falls and National Park.

In 2023 I was in the Sanctuary again and went rhino tracking twice. Amazing.

Going west from Kampala, southern circuit to Fort Portal
You can do a nice circuit tour in Uganda going from Kampala and west to Fort Portal at the foot of the most beautiful Rwenzori Mountains, the Mountains of the Moon. There are two main roads, one looping south going from Kampala through Masaka, Lyantonde, Lake Mburo Game resort, Mbarara, crossing the Kazinga Channel on the Onion Bridge, Katunguru Bridge (Queen Elizabeth National Park),  Katwe, Ishasha River Camp, Kasese, Ntendere Estate, Fort Portal, Bundibugyo. This is the longest of the two.

And then back from Port Portal going straight east via Kyenjojo, Kyegegwa, Mubende, Mityana, Nakasongo and Kampala. No matter which route you prefer, each tour from Kampala to Fort Portal and return to Kampala will take you one day of travelling, unless you stop over and go and see things, which you should.

Not far from Kasese, 10 kilometers, at Mubuku towards Hima and Fort Portal, one may branch off to the left and go into the country between big coffee plantations and almost with a view to Peak Maghrita, the tallest peak in the Rwenzori mountains. But not quite. Instead you reach an area where the Kisaaro (river) Nyamwamba rages. And not too many people. Go there, it is a nice area! Have a look at my pictures from there → here/.

Mweya Safari Lodge
How did I go to Mweya Safari Lodge from Kasese: Following the Kasese/Embarara Road, passing through Kikorongo and by the Equator signpost. At the junction there one can go to Congo. Queen Elizabeth crater drive, Katungoro (onion) bridge, cross it to the HQ of Uganda Wildlife, pay to enter the park, and
don't forget to get your receipt. Otherwise you won't be able to enter the park. Go back over the bridge and turn left to Mweya Safari Lodge. Also here at the junction you may go to Congo (Ishasha).

At the foot of the bridge where the community boats are there is a fresh fish market. On the other side of the road there is a smoked fish market.

  • Mweya Safari Lodge
From Kasese, go East towards the Katunguiro Bridge that crosses the Kazinga Channel. First you have to go and by tickets on the other side, then you go back. Follow the channel towards Katwe Peninsula, and you reach Mweya Safari Lodge.

    Mweya Safari Lodge:

"The Lodge is located on a peninsula within the heart of the Queen Elizabeth National Park and surrounded by the magical Rwenzori Mountains –  the ‘Mountains of the Moon’; Mweya Safari Lodge offers visitors a spectacular experience of luxury in the wilderness."

It's luxury pure and plain, and it is beautiful, with a view over the channel.

East of Kampala

Port Bell
Port Bell is a harbour and a landing site on Lake Victoria. One may actually hire a boat there and go on the lake. We did that. But be careful. The lake is dangerous, and the weather may shift from warm and sunny to storms and violent rain. Also the boats may need a quality check. And remember the life vests. Port Bell Road takes you there from Kampala. Pictures!

  • Sipi Falls, Sipi Valley, Coffee farmer Arabica coffee, Kapchorwa
The local guide was wonderful. He simply knew everyone there. Unfortunaly I was told that he died in a road accident.

Sipi Falls are in Kapchorwa District, at the foot of Mount Elgon, and the plains below stretching West to Lake Kyoga and north to Karamoja. We went on the local road from the Lodge through Kapchorwa District to Kapchorwa town, around 80 kilometers from the Kenya border.

  • See my pictures from Sipi Falls →  here/.

  • And my pictures from the visit to the local coffee farmer, who openmindedly (I think) talked to us about the conditions for growing coffee there: "When the market is poor in Brazil, it is good in Uganda". He showed us his farm and we prepared coffee for drinking ourselves. I even planted my own coffee tree.

  • Our fantastic guide Isaac (who died) took us through the local communities and landscapes to the city of Kapchorwa, with a view to Mount Elgon National Park and a visit to an Olympic Games Marathon winner 2012 in London, England. Thank you very much for this tour.

North of Kampala

Uganda Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary and Karuma Bridge, Karuma Edge, Karuma Falls, River Nile 29/1-2023

Going North out of Kampala via the bypass to Gulu Road. First we take two rhino trackings and one night at the Sanctuary. It is not far, 125 kms. But traveling takes time in Uganda. It is absolutely recommendable going two times tracking the rhinos. You know more and see more. For example one in the afternoon (when you arrive) when it is very hot, and one next morning when it is fresh.

We leave Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary and go North unto 70 kms from Gulu, crossing Kafu River and the diversion of the road, where you can choose to go left to Masindi and Murchison Falls, or continue straight (right) towards Karuma. Via Kibangya, Rwekunye, Kigumba, Kiryandongo, Mpobo and Kikwanga we reached Karuma Falls, Karuma Bridge, Karuma Edge and River Nile.

The river flows water into Murchinson Falls, where I have been a couple of times.
We asked the soldiers there if we could take some pictures. Luckily for us they said yes.

Such beauty.
