  • African Literary Podcast, James Murua  Blog
"Over the last seven years, we have endeavoured to cover literary news from a distinctly Africa-centric lens. That meant reportage on book news, launches, literary festivals, author profiles, and more. We have travelled to festivals in East, West, and Southern Africa, even crossing oceans, to give you information about what is happening in African letters. We have also set up a Literary Podcast to hear the voices of African writers and a YouTube channel where you can see the leading African writers in their element at events virtual and physical."

  • AfriKI Afrikaans Poetry Generation with Artificial Intellingence

  • The AfriKI research led to the publishing of the first co-assisted machine poetry in Afrikaans, also resulting in Afrikaans being the third language worldwide where AI has been successfully used to generate co-assisted poems.

Recent advancements in natural language generation have inspired the use of language models as creative writing tools. AfriKI (Afrikaanse Kunsmatige Intelligensie) is the first to generate creative text in Afrikaans. The model is used as an authoring tool to explore co-creative (human + machine) poetry generation, resulting in short compelling stanzas.

Beyond Afrikaans, collaborative writing systems are slowly gaining ground.
  • But how should the literary community respond? How might Creative AI benefit from literary perspectives? Should AI-generated text be judged by a different set of criteria – or disregarded entirely?

Interpreting in Africa

WHO/AFRO Online conference interpreting internship programme

The idea of a WHO/AFRO internship programme for young African interpreters emerged amid turmoil and uncertainty as the entire world was grappling with the COVID-19 pandemic. As the leading coordinating authority on international health, WHO was at the forefront of the response with other UN agencies and partners. One thus understands the initial, less than enthusiastic reception of the internship initiative, since everyone’s attention was focused on the response. Link here/
